Saying “I do” means you’re ready to spend the rest of your life with your partner, but how many marriages make it 50 years or more? One study showed only 7% are together this long. When your parents have been married this long, it’s definitely time to throw them a memorable 50th wedding anniversary party.
The good news is you can host it at home. You don’t have to rent a venue or come up with some reason to get your parents to go there.
Instead, plan everything and invite your parents over to dinner. They’ll be amazed at all the love and support they’ll receive from friends and family when they arrive.
Plan Around 50th Wedding Anniversary Staples
All the major anniversary milestones have certain themes. The 50th wedding anniversary is usually referred to as the golden anniversary. Part of that is because couples who’ve been together this long are in their golden years.
In addition to gold, you’ll also want to consider using violets or at least violet colored flowers and decorations. Violets are the official flower. A mix of purple hues and gold make for a great 50th anniversary wedding party and those colors are easy to find.
Decide Who Will Host
If you’re an only child, then you’ll want to host the party in your own home. However, if you have siblings, see who has the most space and which home is easiest for your parents and guests to get to. For instance, if a sibling lives three hours away and you live 30 minutes away, it makes more sense to host the party at your home.
Once you decide who is hosting, decide where to hold the party. Will it be indoors or outdoors? If you’re hosting outdoors, rent a tent and have plenty of seating available.
Set The Perfect Date
Even if you’re planning a surprise 50th wedding anniversary party, you need to talk about the date with your siblings, family and your parents’ friends. This is especially true if you have people coming in from out of town.
If it’s not a surprise, involve your parents when setting the date. Remember that they may have plans for the anniversary itself. Setting the date on the weekend before or after the anniversary often works well. You can always have a small dinner at your parents’ home on the date itself if they don’t have plans to do anything. Weekends work better for anyone with kids or people who have to travel far.
Inviting Your Guests
If you know your parents well, you probably already know all their friends too. If you’re not sure, skip the surprise and ask your parents about who they’d like to invite. They’ll be plenty surprised just knowing you want to do this for them.
Once you have your guest list, send out invitations. These should clearly state that it’s a 50th wedding anniversary party. Use invitations with gold writing or accents. To make it even better, add then and now photos to show the happy couple. It’s a great keepsake for all your guests.
Add a few quick facts too, such as the date they married, how many kids and grandkids they have and even their nicknames. Of course, don’t forget the time, date, location and how to RSVP.
The final step is decorating. Gold should definitely be a central theme. Banners with 50th Anniversary are always good. Try to sprinkle in plenty of photos throughout the rooms you’re hosting in. To keep things simple, decorate with flowers, balloons and tablecloths. These are easy to manage and add an elegance to your party. If you don’t want to do violets, opt for your mother’s favorite flowers or what your parents used at their wedding.
A buffet table with finger foods is ideal. Since many of the guests will likely be older, ensure you have ample seating room.
Adding A Few Extras
A 50th wedding anniversary party is a truly special occasion. Make it even more special by adding in a few extras, such as:
- A custom memory book filled with photos for everyone to look at
- Notebooks at every table for friends and family to write down favorite memories
- Small gifts for guests
- A video collage set to music to show at the party
- A playlist of your parents’ favorite songs to play in the background
Naturally, this is in addition to the food. If it’s a fairly active crowd, play some party games to get everyone talking and laughing.
